He decided to become an actor after putting on plays in college. Govil’s first chance to act was in the Indian movie Paheli, which came out in 1977. His sister-in-law Tabassum put him in touch with Tarachand Barjatya. Barjatya liked Govil’s performance in the movie, so he gave him a three-film deal: Sawan Ko Aane Do (1979), Raadha Aur Seeta (1979), and Saanch Ko Aanch Nahin (1979), all directed by Kanak Mishra, Vijay Kapoor, and Satyen Bose, respectively. Sawan Ko Aane Do was a big box office hit, which made Govil a star. Raadha Aur Seeta did not do well at the box office, but Saanch Ko Aanch Nahin did very well. He sang on Kanak Mishra’s song Jiyo To Aise Jiyo, which was 1981’s 30th biggest hit.
In 1988, Arun won the Best Actor in a Leading Role category of the Uptron Award for his role as Ram in the Hindi TV series Ramayan.
